An enviroMETS Member Event
- Dr. Peter Whitbread-Abrutat, a leading global advisor in mine site rehabilitation from Future Terrains International, is visiting the Mackay, Mt Isa, Hunter Valley and Central Queensland regions in July 2024. Peter has over 30 years of experience in sustainable mine site transformation, contributing to many successful post-mining projects globally.
- His visit aims to change the narrative from mine closure to economic transformation of mine sites, leveraging his global experience in sustainable post-mining land use (PMLU) solutions.
- Peter’s foundational research inspired the Eden Project book “101 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground,” with a sequel “102 Things…” to be published in July 2024.
- This sequel will be leveraged in Australia at the Queensland Mining Expo, where Peter will be speaking as well as leading a workshop with Resources Centre of Excellence. Additional workshops have been scheduled to assist the Mt Isa/ NW Region Diversification projects, Brisbane City Council’s Quarry projects, and private briefings with state government agencies, mining houses and industry bodies.
Collaboration with EnviroMETS Qld
- Peter is a noted advisor for enviroMETS, which leads mine site rehabilitation efforts in Queensland. His visit follows enviroMETS organising his Australian leg of his book research tour in 2023. This effort resulted in 15 sites being written up in the new book.
- CEO Allan Morton emphasised the importance of changing the narrative from "mine closure" to "mine site transformation…. Peter’s visit is key to amplifying this message with his experiences of understanding what has worked (and what hasn’t) in transforming old mines into sustainable economic, social and ecological opportunities.”
