  • Leader's Breakfast - 16 May'24

A "By Invite Only" Event

The Queensland mining economy is on the cusp of significant shift...

In 2024 Queensland has about:

  • 100+ operational mines (86 coal ?),
  • 53 mines expected to close by 2040
  • 120 complex abandoned mines to be rehabilitated
  • Mining that represents 35% or $90 B of Queensland’s GVA
  • Over 500,000 people are directly and indirectly employed in high value job

Post mining closures that will impact the economy and create many significant social and environmental
challenges.

  • Glenden and Mt Isa closure impacts represent the vanguard of many to come.
  • The financial assurance scheme is under-funded to rehabilitate mining land without supporting private investment.
  • High value productive post mining land use is inhibited by status quo thinking.

Queensland has a significant and unique opportunity to deliver environmental, economic, and social returns
from land that has been mined previously. There is a real opportunity to operate beyond compliance to de-risk the
future Queensland economy and protect regional and remote communities and their jobs.

We must find innovative and sustainable ways to create more value from mining impacted land for its
future custodians.

Collaboratively planning for a post-mining future through transformation and critical strategic thinking will
deliver real benefits that:

  • Derisk the future Queensland economy
  • Protect regional and remote communities and jobs
  • Deliver significant environmental outcomes including decarbonisation and climate positive gains
  • Provide better value for money for government and industry

You have been invited to this Leaders Breakfast to hear about the progress and proposed future direction
on how Queensland might think about differently about creating opportunities from liabilities of post
mining land.
enviroMETS is seeking your views and on the reported possibilities.
