Advancements in mineral processing, dewatering, and ore sorting technologies have created new opportunities to reprocess tailings and waste rock, unlocking economic, environmental, and social benefits. Historically discarded materials can now be remedied and repurposed, reducing environmental legacies while delivering new economic value.Over time processes and technologies available for mineral processing, dewatering, ore sorting has advanced to lower grade ores and reprocessing of tailings and waste rock.

Innovative technologies enable the liberation and separation of critical metals from mining waste, making remining a viable solution for resource recovery. Successful extraction depends on detailed mineralogical characterisation to identify valuable minerals and optimize processing strategies.

A prime example is the re-commercialisation of Mt Carbine, where X-ray ore sorting technology has transformed waste rock into a viable resource. Previously uneconomic materials are now processed to recover tungsten, with residual waste rock repurposed as high-quality construction aggregate. Reprocessing residual mining materials is more than just a commercial opportunity—it improves environmental outcomes by reducing waste, mitigating contamination risks, and minimising the footprint of mining legacies.
